Tips for Learning Piano in a Short Period of Time

Wish you knew how to play the piano?

There’s no reason why you can’t. All it takes is consistent practice. If you make a plan and stick to it, you’ll get there pretty fast.

Take a look at these quick tips for learning piano before you get started.

1. Sit Down and Actually Practice

For a lot of people, practising piano doesn’t make it on the priority list. Then, in our busy lives, it kind of gets swept under the rug and forgotten.

So the biggest part of learning how to play the piano quickly is actually practising every day.

But don’t let this overwhelm you.

These practice sessions don’t have to be long. In fact, you’ll probably be more productive if you stick to shorter sessions. If you try to practice for over an hour at a time, you’ll wind up mentally exhausted.

Stick with 30 minutes of piano a day. If that still seems a little long to fit into your daily routine, break it up into two or three practice times.

2. Don’t Practice What You Already Know

Because if you already know it, you don’t need to practice it do you?

Now, stick to this rule within reason. Don’t stop playing a song as soon as you’re getting the hang of it because you “know it.” If you do this, you’ll likely forget what you learned and find out you can’t really play anything at all.

But at the same time, don’t keep practising the same songs over and over because you’re comfortable with them.

Once you have a piece down, move on to something a little more challenging. Just revisit the piece every once in a while so you don’t forget how to play it.

3. Slooooow Down

You’ll learn quicker when you play slower. This may sound backward, but if you try to rush through a piece, the more mistakes you’ll make and the longer it will take to learn.

When you finally do get the hang of it, you’ll probably have to unlearn the mistakes you adopted along the way.

So take your time with the sections you don’t know.

Remember, you don’t always have to start from the beginning of a song. If you’re struggling with a section in the middle, practice playing that part on its own. When you start at the beginning every time, you’ll get better at the beginning than you are at the rest of the song.

In other words, you’ll play the beginning a lot faster than the middle and end. The change in pace will be obvious, so play through the piece at the same pace. It’s okay if that pace is a slow one.
